Should You Drink On A First Date?

“Yes, I like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain
I´m not much into health food, I am into champagne

It’s National Pina Colada Day, so what better time to talk about the age-old debate – should you drink on a first date or not?

The Pros –

A small tipple can be a great way to calm the nerves and bring you out of your shell.  We’re all more willing to engage in truthful, meaningful conversation after a drink or two and this is rarely a bad thing with it comes to dating.  Your date wants to see the real you and not a put-on version of yourself.  If having a drink makes this happen, go for it!

The Cons –

It’s easy to over-do it, especially when you’re nervous or anxious.  One drink can turn to two which turns to five and suddenly you’re in a cab home sending them the “I love you, let’s move in together” text.  It can also be tempting to try and go “drink-for-drink” which is a dangerous game so avoid this at all costs!  It’s important to feel safe on your date so never drink if you think it could put you in a situation where you feel vulnerable.  As you won’t be driving, have a lift home organised or the phone number for some local taxis saved in your phone.

The Verdict –

If you fancy a drink, have a drink but be sensible.  Know your limits and remember, you’re not there to get drunk.  First dates can feel a lot like job interviews and a cheeky glass of wine may make the difference between awkward silences and a really enjoyable night.  It’s also important to note what your date is doing.  If they’re not drinking it’s best to avoid it.  Try your best to judge the situation as the evening progresses and act accordingly.

Just remember the most important thing is to be safe and sensible.
