Olympic Love Stories
It’s time for the biggest sporting event of the year to begin! Whether you love supporting your team, or just like drooling over the divers, there’s something for everyone. But there’s another side to the Olympics that isn’t necessarily the top news story.
Olympians become national heroes by bringing home the medals, but some athletes also come home with more than just fame and glory… We take a look at our favourite Olympic love stories.
Rory McIlroy & Caroline Wozniacki
The golfers may be causing a stir at this year’s Olympics, but Rory McIlroy may have had another personal reason for avoiding the games.
Golfing star Rory became engaged to Denmark’s tennis sensation Caroline in 2014. However the honeymoon period didn’t last long and the wedding was called off just days after the invitations were sent out. Things turned nasty when Rory claimed his game had improved since the split, while Caroline has hit back, claiming that everyone should move on. After a shaky start (an injury forced Caroline to pull out of qualifying games), she is now back on track to represent Denmark this year. Could this be the real reason Rory’s not heading to Rio?
Roger Federer & Mirka Vavrinec
Another tennis hero, this time in the form of world champion Roger Federer. He met the love of his like and future wife Mirka at the 2000 Sydney games. She was also competing for the Swiss tennis team and their romance blossomed. Mrika was forced to retire after an injury, but now works as seven-time Wimbledon champ Roger’s PR Manager. There’s nothing like keeping it in the family!
Laura & Greg Bennett
As you can see, unlike Rory & Caroline, this Olympic couple made it down the aisle and tied the knot. At the 2000 Athens games, Laura was preparing for her last event as a US triathlete. Meanwhile Greg, an Aussie triathlete, was debating whether to retire. The athletic duo met at the games and have been together ever since. Their romance wasn’t only a big hit in their personal lives, but also for their careers, as both Laura and Greg went on to compete in 3 more Olympics. There’s nothing like training with your partner to keep you motivated!
Predictions for Rio
Who knows how many love stories will emerge as a result of this year’s games. One thing we do know is that it’s being dubbed the raunchiest games ever, with over 450,000 condoms being provided in the Olympic Village… Ooh err!
