Easter: Around The World

What’s your favourite thing about Easter? The chocolate? Hunting for the chocolate? Buying chocolate? You can probably guess ours… But have you ever wondered what weird and egg-cellent ways that other countries celebrate? We have and this is what we discovered…

Finland Becomes Confused

The Finnish people seem to have got their Easter and Halloween completely mixed up… The children celebrate by dressing up as witches and go begging in the streets for chocolate eggs. They wear scarves on their heads and carry twigs and feathers. Also, mostly in Western Finland, bonfires are lit to warn off the witches who fly around on the Easter weekend. It’s a magical time…

Poland Gets Drenched

The Polish take part in the wet and wild tradition known as Śmigus-dyngus. On Easter Monday men have a massive water fight, throwing water at everyone. Women who get soaked are predicted to be married within the year. The practice is said to be based on Polish Prince Mieszko’s baptism on Easter Monday in 966 AD. Water a great way to celebrate!

Greece Has A Smashing Time

Well, Corfu does anyway. On Saturday morning, people there throw pots and pans out of their windows which smash in the street. The tradition may have originally come from Venice, where people use to throw their old items out on New Year’s Day. Other people see it as a way of welcoming spring, by signalling future crop growth. It’s an Easter pan-demic…

France Eggs-Aggerates

In the southern French town of Haux, many eggs get sacrificed for the holiday, but these ones aren’t the chocolate kind… On Easter Monday the town comes together to make a giant omelette and serve it up to more than 1000 people in the main square, using more than 4,500 eggs! Legend says that years ago, Napoleon and his army visited the town and ate omelettes. He thought they were cracking, so ordered the town to make a giant omelette for his army the following day. We’re not yoaking…

However you’re celebrating Easter, spare a thought whilst you tuck into your chocolate treats for the soaking Polish and the street cleaners of Corfu!
