I was recently invited to write some posts for JustSingles on my dating tips & inspiration from an Edinburgh perspective. I thought it’d be fun to write up my favourite date spots in the capital – categorised by romantic, cool, casual or fun – & give all you ladies (and gents!) some ideas for your next date night..!

Romantic

First off, there’s the intimate, luxurious affairs – of which Edinburgh has many options to whet your appetite. Fancy impressing your date with your knowledge of haute cuisine or spoiling them with luxe surroundings? These are your bag:

Angels With Bagpipes

Described as the sort of place Rabbie Burns might take Sophia Loren for a sophisticated date” (their words!), you’d be a fool to pass up Angels with Bagpipes for a romantic candle-lit date. Perhaps one for celebrating an anniversary or birthday together, you’re sure to feast on the most elegant & delicious of meals. It’s also conveniently located on the historic Royal Mile.. culture and food in one!

The Dome

More interested in bowling them over with your taste in cocktails whilst getting to know each other? The Dome is one to seriously stun ’em. From mojitos at dusk to afternoon tea in The Grill Room, it’s all old-fashioned romance! I’ve been treated to a first date here before and it was the most memorable date I’ve had! One for the gentlemen (or ladies) among us.. Just think James Bond romancing Marilyn Monroe over a well-shaken martini.

Cool

Don’t wanna appear too keen but still want to impress? Lots of well-known or under-the-radar bars are popping up around the city & they’re perfect for showing your date your cool side..

Bar Kohl

My personal favourite bar in the city; Bar Kohl is known for its endless selection of flavoured vodkas from around the world. It’s got comic-book strips all over the ceiling and a slick New York bar feel which will make your date much more chilled out. The selection of quirkily named cocktails will certainly fuel the talking. Maybe not a good choice on a busy Friday night, but certainly pop along mid-week!
Panda & Sons

http://pandaandsons.com/

Panda & Sons is the new kid on the scene, and one you could almost forget exists, given its sneakily disguised frontage as a barber shop. But, skip past that facade, go through the bookcase (!!), and inside awaits a cool prohibition-era Speakeasy inspired bar with an even cooler cocktail menu. One for the cocktail connoisseurs, craft beer enthusiasts & bright young things. Besides.. half the fun is trying to get in! Very popular with those in-the-know..

Casual

Tentatively approaching your first date & too nervous to go all-out just yet? Check out these two ideas to keep your cool & just get chatting in conversation-starting locations!

The Roseleaf

http://www.roseleaf.co.uk

A wee cosy spot in the upcoming Leith area, The Roseleaf in Edinburgh is a pub that merges both traditional Scottish fayre & cool quirky elements. Fancy booking an afternoon tea for your date? The Roseleaf will provide a big ol’ selection of fancy hats for you to wear whilst drinking cocktails out of teacups! Reasonably priced & fun, this is a great date night idea for any point in your relationship!

The City Cafe

http://www.thecitycafe.co.uk/

This could definitely fall under the cool heading, but it’s no less a good reliable option for re-enacting aGrease film scene in a ’50s American-style diner. The City Cafe is notorious for its big breakfasts, but it’s also a good option for sipping on milkshakes & fluttering your lashes at your swoon-worthy date a bit.. You can also have a cheeky go with the jukebox and show your date how awesome your music taste is! Let Sandy meet Danny..

Fun

These Edinburgh date ideas are much more adventurous and fun, for both film fans & nature-lovers alike!

Dominion Cinema

http://www.dominioncinemas.net/

… Thinking I’m running out of ideas by suggesting a clichéd cinema date? Think again! The Dominion Cinema is all about putting the fun back into cinema-going. You get to watch from the comfort of a sofa! And they have all the cinema snacks, but with wine & beer on offer. They even do the occasional classic-film screening, so you two can bond over cult films & get the discussion going! One for the film buffs.

Or… a daytime affair: Climb Arthur’s Seat!

Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, EH8 7

Fancy a fun free day out on one of Edinburgh’s rare sunny days? Drag your date up Arthur’s Seat and appreciate the view from the top! Besides, if it’s okay for One Day‘s Emma & Dexter, it’s good for you guys! Make up a picnic and celebrate your triumphant hike whilst feeding each other strawberries.. romance, eh?

Let me know if you’ve had a great date somewhere in the city! Or, even, the worst date ever..!
